To the south the Cistercians led by Bernard of Clairvaux where already installed at Cîteaux, situated between Dijon and Beaune. To the north the abbey of Fontennay and basilica of Vezelay. The building of the abbey of La Bussiere in the 12th century strengthend the influence of the Cistercian order in this remote region.

The first construction was actually a few miles away but was burnt down. The abbey was founded in 1150AD.

The feudal lord Jean de Sombernon helped financing the builiding of the abbey. His tomb is in the church (died in 1279). The church also contains of tomb stones.

The huge oak wine press situated in the "Cellier" is a remarkable example of the importance of wine in Burgundy.

After the revolution a quarter of the wealth was given to the villagers.

The abbey becomes a private home, the park is transformed into a garden.

The establishment is now a hotel and restaurant, which has earned its first Michelin star in February 2007.
