The village of Malain is historically very important, covering 1128 hectrs at 368 metres above sea-level and on the left bank of the river, with a population of 759.
You'll find the ruins of the Chateau dating from 950 AD, which sits on the hill and imposes its presence over the village. The villagers have been slowly and skillfully rebuilding the castle for some years. Once you climb up the hill to the ruins you will be rewarded with a splendid view of the valley and surrounding contryside.
Below the village is the Gallo-Roman city of Mediolanum which is an important archeological site. The city once covered many square miles and was coins were made here. The museum in the village "la Maison des Fouilles" has many bronze artifacts and other finds from the site.
There are also vine yards on the hill side which are used to produce Cremant (Burgundy Champagne).
