Almost a small town and the important population 1738 is due to the proximity of Dijon. At an altitude of 265 metres, the surrounding hills provide magnificent views of the valley, especially from the chapel at Notre Dame d'Etang.
Velars is now in the shadows of Dijon and has seen an increase in the population with new homes being built. Little remains of the old village, the old road from the village to Dijon which follows the river still has some interesting buildings.
The chapel Notre Dame d'Etang on Mont Africa used to be a destination for pilgrims.
